By William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White

The Elements of Style is one of the most respected authorities of grammar and English usage. Many writers consider it indispensable and refuse to go anywhere without it.

The book began as a slim volume of grammar rules and advisories written in 1919 by college professor William Strunk Jr. for his own English 8 class. He never intended to publish it, but one of his students, E.B. White, returned to it in 1957 and found it to be one of the most concise, clear, and accurate works on English usage he had ever seen. He and Professor Strunk worked together to update and expand the book, and published it as The Elements of Style in 1959.

Over the years, this “little book” has gained tremendous credibility, and this new Fourth Edition has been fully updated for modern English and modern writing styles.
